Template Setup & Excel Help
Use backups, safe data entry habits, and formula checks to avoid accidentally breaking summary tabs or dashboard totals.
Best for: customers who want to customize a workbook without damaging formulas or dashboard calculations.
Important: This guide gives general safe-editing tips. It cannot repair every custom change, and some workbook formulas may be template-specific.
Before editing formulas, deleting rows, sorting data, or changing tabs, save a backup copy. A backup is faster than rebuilding a workbook.
Safe editing habits
- Type only in clearly marked input cells.
- Avoid deleting rows or columns that may feed summaries.
- When pasting from another system, use paste values instead of bringing over outside formatting.
- Do not rename tabs unless the instructions say it is safe.
- Keep a notes area for custom changes you made.
What can break formulas?
| Section | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Deleting rows or columns | Can remove cells referenced by totals. |
| Sorting only part of a table | Can separate names, dates, and amounts from each other. |
| Overwriting formulas | Can cause dashboard or summary totals to stop updating. |
| Renaming tabs | Can break formulas that reference tab names. |
| Pasting external formatting | Can change dates, numbers, colors, formulas, or cell protection unexpectedly. |
Before making changes
- Save a backup. Create a copy with
BACKUPin the file name. - Make one change at a time. Check the summary tab after each major change.
- Use test data first. Try edits on a copy before using your real working file.
- Document customizations. Write down what you changed so support or your bookkeeper can understand the file later.

What is the fastest fix?
Restore from your most recent clean backup and re-enter only the data added after that backup.
